Has anyone had gastric bypass and then had children?

Lisa asked:
I’m starting the process of trying to get approval for gastric bypass and would like to have a child a couple of years down the road. I know this is something I can ask my doctor, but I was wondering how it went for someone who has gone through it?

Yes, my sister had GB almost 2 years ago and is currently pregnant. She’s 7 months. Everything is good and the baby is healthy. She hasn’t gained a lot of weight from the pregnancy, just the baby really, BUT she doesn’t look pregnant either. She just looks kind of like how she did before she had the surgery again, all though it’s only her stomach. So you may end up looking like you are gaining weight instead of pregnant. Doctors recommend that you wait about a year after the surgery before you get pregnant. My sis got pregnant at the 11 month, so she almost made it. Carnie Wilson had hers after GB and delivered safely. She gained alot of her weight back and is still battling it, actually. But she still isn’t as big as she used to be, but definitely not as small as she was before the baby, either. It’s safe and possible. I too am about to start the process for the GBS, and will also plan to have kids afterwards. I wish you God’s best on your path to a healthier you…and on one day being a mommy!

Hiya! I got Pregnant 1 Yr post op. And That was my doctor’s wishes that i wait 1 yr…. I had a healthy baby girl.. but had a hell of a time during the process…. i had morning sickness, i gained weight at first (i was only eating 5-7 meals a day, every 2 hours ya know!) then…. as she got bigger… i got skinnier, lost 40lbs… so it took my total weight loss to 160lbs… as my doctor put it to me – the baby will steal all the nutrients it can. and boy she did. But you HAVE to take your vitamins… like double dose em because without your vitamins, especial b-12, folic acid you could be harming your baby…. other than that, drink plenty of water, eat small meals as much as you can and HAVE FUN! it’s a wonderful experience… and even better when your skinny!!!
