I am only 21 yrs. old, wanting to have Gastric Bypass surgery. I have been looking into everything. I want to know if having this is ruining my chances of having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby? I don’t plan on getting pregnant right away but one day….Just needing to know if anyone has any opinions.

No, it would ruin your chances.
However, gastric bypass is a major surgery that isn’t always going to give you the results you want.
ANY doctor is going to make sure you try EVERYTHING else and that gastric bypass is your last option. Being at least 100+ pounds overweight is going to potentially complicate getting pregnant as well, but unless you are at least 100+ pounds overweight, no doctor will bring up gastric.
I’ve been there–I wanted an easy option like that. Heck, if your doctor says it’s for your health, the insurance will pay for it, right?
Wrong. Gastric bypass does work for some, but it’s not really going to work for many. Most of the time it doesn’t work like people intend and/or it works TOO fast, creating extra skin that you can avoid by exercise and eating well.
In the end, if you can’t eat well and exercise NOW, gastric bypass/lap band isn’t going to help that.

It shoudlnt’ affect your pregnany chances since gastric bypass involves the stomach and not any of your reproductive organs. However, if this is somethign you are interested in doign you will need to for a consult with the doctor and s/he woudl be able to answer your question.

Ask your doctor but a friend of mine had the surgery and her baby girl was fine.

It won’t affect your fertility in the long run. It is however, important that you don’t get pregnant right away; although a coworker had gastric bypass and got pregnant accidentally 2 months later and was able to carry a healthy baby (and actually lost 50 lbs during her pregnancy)

I had the gastric lap-band when I was 23. My surgeron actually TALKED me to out of the bypass at such a young age and the desire to have children. Everything was good.. I never was sick.. tired, had any hair loss etc. I don’t even have to take vitamins (other than now because I’m pregnant) I lost the weight slow enough that my body was able to adjust (because I could choose how fast I lost the weight).
Oh and to give you some background.. I was 23, weighed 387 and I am now 26.. 23 weeks pregnant with #2 and weigh 250. If I would have not made the decision to get pregnant I easily could have lost the rest of the weight but I decided to get pregnant first.. then reach my goal.
The surgery actually HELPED my fertility and I was pregnant one year post op. I had no complications.. and it went great.
Do your research and look into it. At 21 I would NOT have the Gastric Bypass!!!!!!!! If you can’t find a surgeon who will do the band.. keep looking until you find one. Medical studies have even proved the weight loss amongst the two surgeries are the SAME after 3 years.. but those with the band typically do NOT gain the weight back like those with the bypass.
The best part.. is with the band is even if its in 5 years from now I can go get adjusted and basically be able to adjust my eating because I’ll be “tighter” Before getting pregnant with #2 I got a “fill” and lost 20 pounds in 2 months. The same thing will happen once I have this baby.. except I won’t need stop loosing weight I’ll keep going.
Seriously.. I was 100% for the bypass until I found out the benefits of the band at such a young age!

Plenty of people have had babies after gastric bypass surgery, some people have a gastric bypass to improve their chance. You do need to be very careful with your nutrition. It is strongly recommended that you wait at least a year before attempting to become pregnant, but some people have accidentally got pregnant much earlier and still manage to delivery healthy babies. Their is an email support group for mums-to-be who have had weight loss surgery.
One thing to watch out for after surgery is that with hormonal changes it is extra-easy to get pregnant, so take extra care with your contraception.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as Bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
Hope this helps.
