I am facing gastric bypass surgery for my health soon; have you and how was it really?

JENNY asked:
I have many health issues and my dr. is suggesting gastric bypass. I am in my fifties and over weight. I’ve had many different opinions, but I’d really like to hear from those that have experienced it themselves. I’m a little nervous. Thanks heaps for any answers!

Get Lapband…it’s much better and less invasive.

I’ve never had it, but I would look into the lapband first because that can always be taken off.

overweight people do not get invasive surgery. My point is that gastric bypass is reserved for people who have a significant obesity (your body mass index, or BMI, should be 40 or greater. By comparison, a BMI of 25 is overweight, and a BMI of 30 is obese). I would seriously suggest that you ask your doctor these questions:
1] What is the rate of complications within 6 months after the procedure? a] in general, and b] ask about the surgeons personal complication rate.
2] what is the rate for re-hospitalization within 6 months after the procedure for complications related to the procedure?
3] what is my BMI? if it is less than 40, why is this being recommended?
4] what are some alternative procedures? (if this is a Roux-en-Y procedure, its pretty radical – you should look it up)
5] how many people regain weight within 5 years of the procedure? and what percentage is regained?
6] what are the most common problems after having the procedure, specifically regarding infection, pain, nutrient absorption or nutrition.
hope this helps

I personally have not had this done. I know a couple of people who did, they are not real healthy now after having the surgery. Most doctors are pushing the surgery now, and tell only about the success stories. Of the two people I know, one is not healthy , the other is losing her hair, and many other health issues. I went to a website,, and clicked on the link, Gastric Bypass, there is a very good story from a woman that had the surgery on there. Check it out, before your surgery. There are many ways to lose weight without the surgery, I did it, I lost 95 lbs in 8 months with Shapeworks.

I had the roux-en-y
I had gastric bypass surgery in April 2005. I started out at 268, now I’m 180 and holding, after 1 year and 7 months. These links will help you in many ways to make a decision if this is for you or not. I vote yes, because it made such a difference in my life. I was taking 8 pills a day, and after my surgery, I lost my diabetes. The way they do the surgery, takes your diabetes away. I no longer have to take glucophage, and I no longer have high Cholesterol or high blood pressure. I’m down to 2 pills a day. I went from a size 26-28 to a 16-18.
Most people struggle with paying for the surgery. Go to this site, it is a great support system for you, because it’s only people who have had gastric bypass. Every insurance program has been rated, and you’ll get tips on how to deal with your insurance company, as well as, surgery tips, food tips, and just support.
Vitamins I take… you have to be very faithful about taking them after surgery, because you can become very sick if you don’t. There were recommended by my surgeon and nutritionist.
There is a very good web site by a guy named Basil White. He’s a govt. worker and a comedian. He walks you through everything. Very interesting. He had the surgery and did well.
