gastric bypass

Ok so I am an extremely picky eater and just had gastric bypass surgery. So I was wondering what are some good meals that are high in protein that I could eat to change it up a bit.

That’s hard to answer without knowing how long ago you had surgery, and what things you do and don’t like.

I’m 7 months out. If you’re up to soft foods, I ate fat free or lowfat refried beans (sometimes with some avocado cut up in it, and some nonfat plain greek yogurt as ‘sour cream’ to add more protein since the greek yogurt is REALLY high in protein) a lot. I also would put some lowfat shredded cheese in it. You may or may not tolerate dairy very well. I had no problems.

I also ate cottage cheese a lot.

If you’re getting enough protein with protein drinks or similar, and can stand to eat some things that are NOT just protein, I would also recommend the cubed and frozen bags of potato and sweet potato. You steam it in the microwave and mix together. It’s real potato, and you can add spices…I again mixed in some greek yogurt with the regular potatoes, and it was like sour cream mashed potatoes. You could use regular potatoes, too, but the quantity you can eat is so small that it worked better for me to keep the frozen stuff on hand.

I still buy frozen veggies and those potatoes. Fresh stuff goes bad before I can eat it.

You can also buy flavored greek yogurts. Trader Joe’s has a variety. I REALLY don’t like plain yogurt of any kind by itself, but the flavored stuff is good. Non-greek yogurt would be good to try, too, but just a much lower protein content.

Those are all soft foods I tolerated well.

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the website, but there are a lot of forums on there with recipes and things. You can ask questions, help out other people, track weight loss, etc. I’ve got a blog on there. I don’t update it VERY often, but it’s a good way to stay in touch with other people who have been through the same thing.

For my birthday in March, my mom bought me a cookbook called “Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery” by Patt Levine and Michele Bontempo-Saray. I LOVE IT! It’s got foods for all stages of the diet we need to follow, in the beginning and forever. My best friend is a nurse, so she eats healthy as it is. Whenever I go visit her, she makes meals from this cookbook and she and her husband and I eat that. She did it at first to just be supportive, but ended up buying the cookbook for herself just because the recipes we tried were so tasty! She’s about 110 pounds so she doesn’t need to try and lose weight. :)

    It’s available on amazon.com.

I’m rachieo on the ObesityHelp site – look me up there if you want to. I’ll help any way I can. Congrats!
