Why doesn’t gastric bypass work on some people?

gastric bypass
GRACIE P asked:

I had gastric bypass 5 years ago. I lost 130 lbs, and have now regained 90 lbs. For the past 3–almost 4 years—I never experience that “full” feeling. Yet, when the surgeon tested my pouch size, it’s still intact. I don’t understand why I can’t lose the weight.

There are a complex set of factors that determine weight. You have probably changed your diet significantly since you had the surgery. I know several people who have had bariatric surgery and lost weight only to regain it later. My suggestion is to cut gluten out of your diet. There is a growing number of people online who are morbidly obese and are realizing that their problems are related to gluten. Also, make sure you haven’t let your calorie intake slip up too high. It happens a little at a time until you’re eating a lot more than you used to. Even if your pouch is still the right size, you still may not experience the full feeling if you arent’ getting the right nutrition. Hunger is determined by the brain, not the intestines. You may feel “full” in your intestines, but if you are malnourished, your brain will keep telling you to eat.

Some other suggestions are to make sure that you get your thyroid tested and look up the lab values yourself. There are lots of changes that have happened lately in the world of endocrinology and most general physicians are not up on the latest recommendations. There are lots of people with a tsh of 4-5 who are being told that their thyroid levels are within range when they are infact hypothyroid. There are also physicians who are recognizing subclinical hypothyroidism even if your lab values are normal, but you experience the symptoms of it.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about nutrition or ways to improve your metabolism. Good luck!
